Property prices and accessibility in the West Nivernais area

On the western side of the Morvan Regional Park, this is one of the least known areas of Burgundy but it is worth exploring if you are seeking a rural life. Areas close to Vézelay are slightly more expensive, otherwise prices are very reasonable.

Vaux de Yonne, Burgundy, France A.Doire/C.R.T. Bourgogne
Where the Morvan and Nivernais join:  the Val d’Yonne.
Fifteen minutes down the road from Vézelay, the countryside around Clamecy is undulating and rural. Both Auxerre and Avallon are within easy reach. Clamecy itself is charming. The town has a gentle air about it with the winding cobbled streets, half timbered houses and river setting. It is well served with shops for everyday needs both in the town and on the outskirts.

Clamecy Saint Martin
Clamecy
This city has an illustrious past. Since the time of the Crusades pilgrims have passed this way on their journey from Vézelay to Santiago de Compostelo via La Charité-sur-Loire and Nevers. Prosperity came to the region through log floating, the method of transporting timber down the river. For 300 years the Yonne and later the Canal du Nivernais linking Corbigny to Clamecy provided valuable transport routes. Saw mills and charcoal production were the economy’s mainstay, supplying Paris with firewood and building materials. You can find the charcoal burners in the woods today.

The waterways still bring activity in the town. During the summer months the canal with the cruisers and hotel barges call into port. The story of the Canal du Nivernais is told at the museum dedicated to Romain Rolland, a French writer and philosopher who was born here.

Corbigny and surroundings

The journey between Clamecy and Corbigny along the river valley and canal is a pretty one, flanked by wooded hillsides. The villages of Armes, Metz-le-Comte and Tannay have views to be enjoyed over the Yonne valley. The countryside is gentle and undulating, ideal grazing land for Corbigny’s well known cattle market. The Abbaye de Corbigny in the town has recently been restored and turned into a cultural centre for the arts, and here regular musical events are staged. Off the beaten track, there are several less well known châteaux gracing the landscape and worth exploring: Villemolin, Lantilly, Marcilly, Coulon, Saugny, and Raffigny.
