Property prices and accessibility in Champagne-Aube

The areas of southern Champagne bordering with Burgundy remain relatively unexplored by overseas clients looking for a main residence or second home and as such prices are extremely reasonable and properties offer great value for money. Some of the more famous wine villages and Troyes itself will be relatively more expensive, and whilst the majority of people will pass through this area rapidly, those that stop for the first time are not disappointed! One of the few great value remaining areas.

Aube Nature France by Cédric GIRARD
Aube Department
From Burgundy into Champagne
Crossing over the ‘border’ between Burgundy and Champagne, both the scenery and the villages change in character immediately. Straight away you have huge expanses of vineyards in gently undulating terrain, interspersed by forests. This is the Aube department, north of the Châtillonnais, a hugely prosperous area where the grand domains of the vignernons are tucked away behind high stone walls. It doesn’t have the earthiness of its neighbour Burgundy, but a more refined atmosphere.

Famous Pink Champagne
Les Riceys
Take Les Riceys, three km from Burgundy. Here they produce the pink champagne, which has now become so sought after, in an area of 800 hectares – the largest terroir in the Champagne region. In a corridor stretching north all the way to Bar-sur-Aube you can follow the Champagne trail, tasting as you go. And to accompany the champagne, look out for the famous cheese of the area, Chaource, soft, smooth and creamy in texture.

Renoir Essoye Champagne France www.essoyes.fr

Auguste Renoir
The attractive villages and countryside of this region was a great inspiration for the famous artist Auguste Renoir, evident in many of his canvases. His studio in the delightful village of Essoyes is well worth a visit. This little village is dedicated to the painter whose wife was born here. This was their ‘maison secondaire’, finding the light, the countryside and the local people an inspiration. His atelier is open to visitors, a simple yet charming introduction to his life.

Bar-sur-Seine
At the confluence of five valleys Bar-sur-Seine is a beautiful medieval market town with half timbered houses. Further along the valley of the Seine is Mussy-sur-Seine another well preserved medieval town which has pretty cobbled lanes to explore, its salt warehouse, Jewish quarter and 12thC hospital.

Bar-sur-Aube
This is a larger town, equally well preserved with medieval buildings and churches. Each year it stages a famous wine fair. Close by is Niglogand, an amusement park for the kids. There are plenty of outdoor activities in the area from golf and cycling to wind surfing on the lakes in the Forest d’Orient. Clairvaux Abbey, a Cisterian monastery is also worth visiting.

Troyes Champagne France by www.cobaty.com
Between Bars and Troyes
This part of the Aube is a popular tourist region, with scope for anyone wanting to set up a chambres d’hôtes or gîte operation alongside the Champagne houses. The medieval city of Troyes, the ancient capital of Champagne, is a hidden gem and has been largely preserved with its narrow streets lined with beautiful half timbered houses. Troyes is only 30 km from Bar-sur-Seine and provides excellent shopping and all services.
