Property prices in the Sancerrois area

Prices of property for sale in Cher represent very good value for money. Cheap property is easy to find in this rural department with old character farmhouses and cottages. The property market in the Loire area  is popular with those who have decided to retire to France and with young families. There is a healthy rental market and gites and bed and breakfasts also appear on the market frequently.

Accessibility of the Sancerros

With the completion of the A77 ‘Autoroute des Arbres’ Sancerre is 2hrs from Paris by road, 5hrs 30 from the Channel Ports, and 8 hrs from Amsterdam Paris Orly and Paris Charles de Gaulle are the closest airports. By train, Cosne-sur-Loire is the nearest station with a regional service to Paris Gare de Lyon.

14 villages of the Sancerrois area
Sancerrois
Just across the river Loire from Pouilly-sur-Loire, is the charming village of Sancerre. In reality, it is more than one village: it is a whole region, made up of 14 villages dotted between the rich green of the vineyards and the undulating wheat fields. Sancerre is in the Loire region, and falls in the Cher department. ‘This is not the Loire of gentry and chateaux’, says food and wine writer Patricia Wells, ‘but a land that is at once carefree and hardworking, a place where the visitor is neither tourist or stranger.’

Sancerre on a pedestal
Sancerre
The fortified village of Sancerre stands proud in this landscape, 300 m above sea level. As you approach by car, it looks as if it has been placed on a pedestal, from the edge of which, the Esplanade Porte César, you have a 180 degree panoramic view over the Loire valley to the forests of the Puisaye in the distance. Or climb the 195 steps up the Tour des Fiefs for an even more magnificent view. Well- kept and prosperous, with winding streets and tall, narrow, tightly packed houses, it is delightful place to wander around, stopping off maybe at a café or to try the local wine in the Quartier Vigneron.

White Wine
The dry, flinty white Sancerre wine has made this little corner of France famous across the world. The Sauvignon Blanc grape variety is king here, perfect wine with fresh fish, fruits, vegetables and goats’ cheese. (When you see signs saying ‘la friture est arrivee’ make a beeline for the bar or restaurant and try the delicious little fish, with a glass of chilled white wine.) Next to the church in the town, you will find Maison des Sancerre, giving complete information about the wines, the soil and the producers.

Crottin de Chavignol
White Cheese
Crottin de Chavignol is the acclaimed goats cheese of the area. Made in the local villages such as Chavignol itself and Veaugue, this is one of the finest cheeses in France, which is saying something in a country renowned for the variety, quality and quantity that it produces. You can visit the producers too, and see and sample at first hand, an outing that the children in particular will enjoy.

Green Activities
The river Loire of course is a focal point of activity. The golf course at Golf du Sancerrois runs along the banks of the river or you can go fishing, kayaking, walking and cycling. The islands of the Loire, at Ménétréol sous Sancerre are particularly rich in flora and fauna, perfect for the birdwatcher who may be rewarded sighting the black woodpecker and the boreal tit. During the summer the emphasis is on the great outdoors; the Canal Latéral de la Loire comes alive with canal cruisers and pleasure craft, the cafes and restaurants are geared for eating al fresco, and the markets are buzzing.
