Accessibility
The A77 autoroute makes this area very accessible. From south of Paris to Nevers travel time is 2hrs 40 (246km); from Amsterdam it is 8hr (748km) and from Cologne 8hrs 30 (764km). This autoroute is in the process of being continued to Moulins. The N81 provides a good road down to Decize, continuing on to Bourbon Lancy. By rail, the Corail Téoz train from Paris Gare de Lyon to Nevers on the Clermont Ferrand line provides a quality service. By air, Paris Charles de Gaulle is the closest airport.

Apremont-sur-Allier
Just south of Nevers you will find one of the most beautiful villages in France, Apremont-sur-Allier. This is a picture postcard, as lovely as any Cotswold village in England. It is not medieval as you might at first think but was rescued by one of the Schneider steel family between the two wars and rebuilt. The grounds of the old château are parkland, much visited for the elegant trees, planting and Pagoda bridge. |

Bec Allier and the Loire
Also just south of Nevers lies the Bec d’Allier, a protected nature reserve. Over 200 different species of birds have been sighted here on their migration path; there are alluvial forests and flora and fauna unique to the area. A true discovery for nature lovers. |

Magny Cours Racing Circuit
One of the highlights of this area, and the whole of Burgundy, is the Magny Cours Racing Circuit, home of the French Formula 1 Grand Prix. Apart from hosting the number one race, there is a full calendar of events over the year from the World Superbike championships, to classic cars and karting. Improvements are in the pipeline for the circuit facilities under the banner Magny Cours II.

Decize
Towards the east, off the N81, the medieval town of Decize rises up from the Loire on a rocky spur. Moats, towers and the remains of battlements show it to have been of major strategic importance centuries ago. The gateway, the Marquis d’Ancre is thought to date back to 1194; the fortifications are 16thC.
On entering the town, running parallel to the river, you will find the Promenade des Halles, a 985m walkway edged with magnificent lime and plane trees planted in 1770. There are several churches worth investigation plus the cloisters and chapel of the Couvent des Minimes. History lovers will be interested too in the interesting murals in the tiny church at Verneuil, just to the west of Decize dating back to the 15thC. Decize is surrounded by lovely landscapes where there is plenty of scope for keen fishermen, walkers and cyclists, bird watchers and nature lovers.
The town comes to life on the water in the summer. Here the river Aron joins the Loire, and the Canal du Nivernais and the Canal Latéral à la Loire converge. Pleasure boats of all kinds from barges to kayaks create a good atmosphere. The Canal du Nivernais is one of the most beautiful of the Burgundy canals, passing through Clamecy to the river Yonne at Auxerre and a cycle route follows the canal all the way.
