Apart from the Canal, the River Cure flows through this region with the Abbaye de Reigny along its path. This is a limestone region with craggy cliffs and deep valleys resulting in spectacular caves, the Grottes d’Arcy. These contain prehistoric paintings and remains of almost all the stages of human evolution have been discovered, their origins dating back more than 250,000 years. The medieval town of Vézelay is close by, one of the gems of Burgundy.
Other good places to take visiting friends during their stay with you are the medieval towns of Noyers and Montréal with their active summer festivals. There are local shops and supermarkets in Vermenton but for larger purchasing Auxerre or Avallon provide everything that is required.
